Refinishing Rattan or Wicker Furniture

Many people choose to paint their wicker, rattan, or cane furniture white.

If your furniture is looking a little dingy, be sure to give it a good cleaning before deciding to repaint. You may find that after cleaning it has been restored to its original beauty.

Should you decide that your furniture really does need a new coat of paint you will need to determine whether you will need to go through the hassle of stripping the old paint off, or if you can do the job with just a few sprays from a can of paint. It is best to use a coat of primer to conceal any scuffs or marks, followed by a final coat from a spray can.

It is best not to strip wicker furniture that has not been painted. For old wicker furniture that was given a clear finish that is now chipped the best solution is to first clean the furniture and then add another clear coat over the entire piece, including chipped areas. For furniture that has been stained, you should touch it up with a quality oil stain before applying the clear finish.
